How to stop dreadlocks from itching
Nov 27, 2016
People are asking what to do when you have a really, really itchy scalp when it comes to dreadlocks.
A lot of dread-heads feel that their scalp changes, both when they start to make dreadlocks in the beginning and also when the weather is changing.
Here in Sweden, when it comes from summer, and the fall starts, and you feel the climate change.
A lot of people get really, really dry in their scalp and it starts to get really, really itchy. Also, I notice that I get itchy on my body as well.
One thing that a lot of people don’t know when it comes to dry scalp is that it has a lot to do with how much water you have inside of your body. It can be a sign of dehydration, if you have a really, really itchy scalp.
So, number one: start to drink a lot of water, so you will keep yourself moist in the body.
One thing that you have to think about when you have dreadlocks is that when the dreadlocks grow, it tends to leave a lot of loose hair like this in between. If you keep on having all of this matted hair that doesn’t really go to a specific dreadlock, then it can start to dread together, and your scalp will not get any air and it can’t breathe.
So, that’s one thing that can make your hair really itchy and really dry. So, you should really think about that you have to keep on getting your dreadlocks maintained. You can go to a saloon and have it done, or you can learn how to do it by yourself. But, keep your dreadlocks separated and make sure there’s not too much loose hair in-between.
Another thing that you can use to cool your scalp down, is a cooling spray. In the shop we sell three different versions of this.

We have two from Dollylocks and this one from Knottyboy. They work in the same way, they just have different types of smell. And when you spray this – it has a spray thing here – it really cools the skin down, and that will help your scalp not to itch that much. It actually takes away some smell from your hair as well, so it helps your hair to become clean. It helps the itchiness go down.
So, you should try one of these; it will really, really help you, especially if you have new dreadlocks made and they’re really, really tight, it can become really, really itchy. So, use one of these just to cool the scalp down.
If you have brand new dreadlocks and they start to itch a lot, that’s normal.
You don’t have to freak out about it.
Some people call me and ask me if they have lice or they start to have something weird happening with the dreadlocks, but don’t worry about it. It’s the tension that creates when you create a dreadlock, and it will – as soon as the hair starts to grow a bit, then it will loosen a bit and the tension will loose, and it won’t itch as much.
You have to think about what type of shampoo do you use.
Do you wash your hair enough?
I recommend that you wash your dreadlocks about once a week. Make sure to get them really, really dry afterwards. It’s really important, if you have an itchy scalp, that you use a shampoo that will keep the itchiness down. Go over to this page : http://dreadstuff.com/pages/dreadlock-shampoo and you will find different shampoo’s that we offer.
If you’re not sure which shampoo to use, you can download our ‘dreadlock shampoo guide’ and there you will see what type of shampoos work if you have really, really dry scalp. So, don’t freak out and cut your dreadlocks off just because it’s itchy and you’re annoyed. Don’t worry, there’s things that you can do to help that out.
I hope this will help you out and that you will get rid of the itchiness once and for all.
